KUCHING: It is time to place greater emphasis and effort on elevating the art of silat in Sarawak onto the international stage.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said silat’s significance is beyond self-defence; as it has become a sport which is competed at the global level.

“Silat is not merely a martial art; it has evolved into a sport with international recognition.

“Therefore, it is imperative for Sarawak to prioritise producing skilled silat exponents who can not only bring honour to Sarawak but also put Malaysia on the world map,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after officiating at the Al-Qamar Marapati silat court and the Sarawak Silat Art Association (PSSSS) Tanjak Serinding Awan usage proclamation at Amanah Khairat Yayasan Budaya Melayu Sarawak (AKYBMS), Rumah Laksamana Muda, here today.

Fadillah hoped to witness silat being included in platforms like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

“Thailand is renowned for its Muay Thai, which successfully clinched many championship titles in the UFC.

“Hence, perhaps silat can be brought into the UFC to show that these techniques can be a source of pride worldwide,” he said.

He also pointed out the importance of collective efforts not only in nurturing champions but also in safeguarding the rich cultural legacy of the Malay community.

“Our focus shouldn’t solely be on producing winners but on preserving our cultural identity.

“Silat represents a significant aspect of Malay arts and culture, deserving recognition and global exposure,” he stressed.

Present at the event were Satok Assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki; Kuching North Mayor Hilmy Othman and Patron of PSSSS Datuk Dr. Sanib Said.
