KUCHING, Sept 16: The development of Tanjung Embang as a low-carbon hub is expected to inject total investment of around RM100 billion into Sarawak's economy over the next decade, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the development will be supported by a new international airport and seaport, while Bintulu has been selected as one of 43 Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TICs) worldwide and the first in Malaysia under the aegis of the World Economic Forum.

"The Embang South Cape is designed to be the gateway to a broader economic network as a low-carbon hub", he said while addressing the 2026 Malaysia Day National Rankings Meeting at Borneo Kuching Convention Centre (BCCK), here tonight.

Brother Johari said that the potential of Sarawak has also attracted the attention of regional development institutions including Asian Development Bank (ADB), as well as seeing cross-border energy connections through electricity supply to Kalimantan, strengthened ties with Sabah and plans to provide electricity to Brunei.

"This shows that Sarawak's energy has an increasingly important role in the development of Borneo and ASEAN", he said.

Thus, he was confident that the close cooperation between the Government of Sarawak and the Federal Government could lead the state towards the status of a developed and high-income region by 2030, thus allowing Sarawak to continue contributing to a stronger Malaysia as well as a more integrated ASEAN. - TVS
