Taylor’s College collaborates with SMPK Vokasional Merbok to support special needs students

MIRI: Taylor’s College, known for its commitment to advancing purposeful learning, has partnered with SMPK Vokasional Merbok to support practical education initiatives.
The collaboration focuses on empowering special needs students through the implementation of Projek School Enterprise Kedai Dobi OKU and the Mock House Training Centre.
The goal is to equip these students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a smooth transition into the workforce, ensuring their success beyond graduation.
Campus director Josephine Tan noted the institution’s mission to excel not only in education but also for the wellbeing of society.
The commitment extends to supporting teachers and students at primary and secondary levels, preparing them for tertiary education and successful careers.
Projek School Enterprise Kedai Dobi OKU and Mock House Training Centre, championed by teacher Kumaresan Muniandy, recipient of the RISE Educator of the Year 2023 award, receives funding and support from Taylor’s College.
The initiative addresses concerns raised by a mother about her son’s job security post-high school graduation, aiming to provide equal job opportunities and empower students for employment.
The training includes low-functioning students, special needs workers, and participants from Community-Based Rehabilitation.
Kumaresan highlighted the importance of providing hands-on experience in the hospitality sector to open doors for students, instilling confidence and enabling them to navigate their own journey beyond school.
Students undergo training in computer use for resume and job application preparation, applying for leave, and participating in interview simulations.
Taylor’s College has contributed a total of RM10,000 in sponsorship, revitalising the Mock House Training Centre and enhancing Projek School Enterprise Kedai Dobi OKU with industrial-grade equipment.
Additionally, the college has provided five complete sets of computers to SMPK Vokasional Merbok’s library, enriching educational resources.
Headmistress Rabthah Abd Rahim expressed appreciation for Taylor’s College support, acknowledging the transformative impact on special needs students and expressing excitement for future beneficiaries.
Tan praised Kumaresan’s commitment to inclusivity and education for all, aligning with Taylor’s dedication to inclusive education.
The collaboration exemplifies Taylor’s College’s commitment to recognising and supporting impactful initiatives, especially those contributing to inclusive education.
This partnership marks the third year of Taylor’s College recognising exceptional educators in Malaysia through the RISE Educator Award.
