KUCHING: Sarawak’s aim of winning a medal in the road cycling individual time trial (men’s category) was scuppered after Afif Darwysh Mohamad Nazir had to settle for fourth place.
Afif Darwysh recorded a time of 50 minutes 27 seconds and 226 milliseconds, trailing by 2 minutes 3 seconds and 346 milliseconds behind the three medalists.
Kee Zhe Yie from Terengganu won the gold medal at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma), setting a record of 48 minutes 23 seconds and 880 milliseconds with a speed of 46.490 kilometres per hour.
He was followed by Perak’s Muhammad Adam Hakimi Nazuan, who clinched the silver medal in the event.
Recording a time of 49 minutes 34 seconds and 439 milliseconds at a speed of 45.387 km/h, Muhammad Adam forced Newjoe Lau from the Federal Territory took home the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, another cyclist from Sarawak, Azrul Aiman Abu Seli, finished ninth with a time of 53 minutes 17 seconds and 714 milliseconds at a speed of 42.218 km/h.
In total, 19 riders from Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Johor, Pahang, Federal Territory, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Perlis participated in the event.
The men’s road event covered a distance of 37.5km starting and ending at Politeknik Kuching, involving the route along Jalan Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.
