KUCHING, 19 September: The 2027 SEA Malaysia Sports Race from Limbang to Kuching will be among the main initiatives to bring this prestigious theme spirit closer to communities across Sarawak.
Deputy Secretary of Government of Sarawak (Operation) embraced the Chairman of SEA Sports Malaysia Secretariat 2027 for Sarawak Cluster, Datu Hii Chang Kee said that the torch run was designed based on the experience of running SUKMA Sarawak XXI, thus giving people an opportunity to feel the essence of SEA Sports earlier.
According to him, the torch race is not just a symbolic event, but rather a symbol of unity, pride and shared ownership towards the 2027 SEA Games.
"This torch race will connect communities across Sarawak as we head towards September 2027, besides giving people the opportunity to get directly involved on their way to SEA Games", he said at the Annual Second Countdown Council Towards SEA Games 2027 here, last night.
He said that the initiative is also expected to raise awareness, enthusiasm and community engagement spirit before the event starts.
"We want the spirit of SEA Sports not only to be felt at the venue in Kuching, but throughout Sarawak, from the northern province to the capital", he said.
In 2027, Malaysia will host the SEA Games with Sarawak becoming one of the clusters alongside Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
For Sarawak, the exhibition was not just a sporting event but an opportunity to introduce the state to athletes, officials and visitors from across Southeast Asia in terms of diversity of society, culture, sports facilities and hospitality.
Sarawak is scheduled to host 18 sports comprising 281 of the 480 events contested at the 2027 SEA Games.
According to Chang Kee, with a year remaining before the ceremony, preparations are now entering an important phase that requires close coordination and cooperation from all sides.
He said the organising committee is now supported by 22 working committees to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.
"There's still a lot of work to be done in the next year. The success of the promotion requires close coordination and cooperation between government agencies, sports associations, technical officials, volunteers as well as strategic partners.
"I am confident with the commitment, experience and teamwork spirit of all parties, Sarawak will be ready to welcome the regional sports community in 2027", he said.
He also appreciated all the parties involved for their commitment and efforts so far.
He said all parties should move towards a common goal to ensure that the SEA Games 2027 will be a successful one and leave meaningful memories for Sarawak, Malaysia as well as the entire Southeast Asian region. - TVS
