MIRI, Sept. 21: Department of Irrigation and Sewerage (DID) has been urged to implement more regular maintenance of reservoir and levee systems to ensure no obstacles can contribute to flooding in Senadin area.
Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that the cleanup work of water plants, including sewerage and other plants in the reservoir near Jalan Ilmu which connects Senadin Village area has been completed.
He said the maintenance should also cover the main reservoir as well as the main drainage system in the area.
"There needs to be a more regular maintenance program for all the main reservoirs and locks to ensure that they are cleaned and there is no obstruction to the drainage system", he said while reviewing the work on cleaning the reservoir in Senadin, here today.
According to him, the plants in the reservoir are growing rapidly and require cleaning work carried out every few months.
Lee Kim Shin said that coordination between local authorities and the DID is also important to ensure a system of equalization under their respective responsibilities is fully organized.
Meanwhile, he said RM3 million special allocation has been approved for works related to parity system in Senadin area, including Senadin Village, Tudan and Permyjaya.
He hoped that the allocation could be used to carry out maintenance work as well as upgrade parity system in the area concerned.
In the meantime, he also urged local authorities to pay attention to garbage and floating debris accumulated in the reservoir.
He said the remains were believed to have been transported through a particle board system before being collected in the reservoir.
He also informed that work on upgrading Jalan Ilmu which was affected by floods earlier this year is being carried out with an allocation of about RM1.4 million.
The road rehabilitation work was part of a flood recovery program that took place earlier this year.
