KOTA SAMARAHAN, 13 September: Sarawak Zone PolyCC Convocation Council Year 2026 was a special moment for Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Hajah Rubiah Wang when his son, Mohamad Azeem Mohamad Salleh successfully completed his studies in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Mohamad Azeem, 22, successfully completed his studies in Mechanical Engineering Diploma (Manufacturing) at Kuching Sarawak Polytechnic and will continue his studies to the Degree level in the same field at University of Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
Rubiah also attributed his son's success as proof that TVET is capable of being a good education option for young people, especially those with an interest and commitment to skills.
"For me his success (Muhammad Azeem Salleh) in the field of TVET, this skill training is very important because first he has shown interest and commitment to TVET at an early stage and therefore this TVET became one of his choices which under this field, he can show good performance", he said.
Rubiah said this after attending the Sarawak Zone 2026 PolyCC Convocation Meeting at DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS on Sunday.
According to Rubiah further, the TVET route is now expanding and is no longer limited to basic skills, but instead encompasses science and technology-based fields that are in high demand in the industrial sector.
He said that the development of new technologies and emergence of new economic sectors in Sarawak are increasing the need for local labour force with specific skills relevant to industrial needs.
He said positive changes in perceptions of society, including rural youth, also contributed to increased interest in skills-based education.
Meanwhile, Rubiah hopes the success of TVET graduates, including his son, can inspire more young people to choose such educational paths as preparation for building a high-skilled career in TVS.
