MIRI, 15 Sept: The celebration of Malaysia Day should be a space for people to celebrate the history of nation formation and appreciate the spirit of understanding and cooperation that was fundamental to the establishment of Malaysia, said Publicity and Information Secretary of SUPP Central including Member of the Legislative Assembly (ADUN) Pujut, Adam Yii.
Clearly, Malaysia Day celebrated on September 16 is not just a celebration, but an opportunity for today's generation to understand the country's historical journey.
He said the Federation of Malaya achieved independence on 31 August 1957, while Malaysia was formally formed on 16 September 1963 with the involvement of Sarawak and Sabah.
"This history is important to continue passing on to younger generations so that they understand how Malaysia was formed and the role of Sarawak in the country's historical journey.
"Sarawak is among the provinces that together make up Malaysia and this history deserves to continue to be appreciated and respected", he said in a statement today on Malaysia Day.
According to Adam, an understanding of the history of Malaysia's formation is also important in attempting to appreciate the spirit of the 1963 Malaysian Treaty (MA63), including the position and role of Sarawak and Sabah within the Federation.
He said some positive developments have been achieved in recent years through ongoing cooperation and negotiations between the Government of Sarawak and the Federal Government.
At the same time, he said, several matters related to MA63 are still under discussion and implementation.
"It is hoped that all the efforts and negotiations underway can continue to be strengthened so that the things identified can be implemented in stages for the common good", he said.
Adam said efforts to strengthen Sarawak's autonomy, development and position in the Federation should not be seen as an attempt to distance the state from Malaysia.
On the other hand, he said that Sarawak which continues to grow and develop in various fields will also contribute to Malaysia's strength as a whole.
"Sarawak's strong economy, continued progress in education, health and development will benefit not only the people of Sarawak but also the country.
"In a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, we can continue to build a stronger and more prosperous Malaysia", he said.
He also called on the young generation to understand the history of the homeland, appreciate Sarawak's role in the formation of Malaysia and continue to maintain the harmony of a multi-racial society.
"Let us continue to respect history, honor diversity and preserve the peace and harmony that are our country's strength.
"I congratulate all Malaysians on Malaysia Day", he said. TVs
