KUCHING, Sept. 14: The Unit Complex for the Interreligious Affairs (UNIFOR) is not just a building but an image of Sarawak's identity that builds a future through diversity, harmony and mutual respect.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the existence of the complex carries great significance in line with the spirit of Malaysia Day as it reflects a society built on the foundation of diversity, yet chooses to share a shared future.
"The UNIFOR complex is being built in front of the Islamic Explanation Center on Ong Tiang Swee Road. Two religious-space-related institutions stand facing each other as neighbors. Not in competition, but in a spirit of mutual respect and living together", he said.
He said this through the text of a speech read by Deputy Prime Minister Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embassy at the Other Religions' Thanksgiving Council in conjunction with the National Level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration here tonight.
Commenting further, he said, the situation reflects Malaysia's true value of appreciating differences without making them a source of division.
According to him, the UNIFOR Complex is not just a building, but rather a reflection of who Sarawak's society is and how harmony should be part of state development.
"The UNIFOR complex is not just a building. It's a reflection of who we are as Sarawak people", he said.
Brother Johari, it is clear that harmony is not a side issue in development as it should be part of the foundation for the future construction of Sarawak.
He added, Sarawak's experience proves that different societies of religions, races and backgrounds are able to move forward with the same goals, without having to eliminate differences in order to achieve unity. - TVS
