SEGAMAT, 19 Sept: Village Library of Hulu Maludam Kampung, Sarawak is among the examples of village libraries that have managed to expand its role through implementation of various literacy programs according to local community needs.

Director-General of National Library Malaysia (PNM), Edy Irwan Zulkafli said that the implementation of adult reading classes at the library proves that the role of village libraries is no longer limited to preparing literature.

"The Kampung Hulu Maludam Village Library also received the Chief Minister of Sarawak Public Library Award in 2020 and continues to record outstanding achievements through the Community Centre Village Library Awards from 2022 to 2024", he said.

He said this during his address to the Community Determination Program, Semar Unity Segamat here today.

It was attended by Deputy Union Minister, Yuneswaran Ramaraj.

According to Edy Irwan, the continued achievements show that village libraries are capable of being a catalyst for change when the services and programs provided truly meet local community needs.

In this regard, he said, the approach implemented in Kampung Hulu Maludam Village Library can be extended to other village libraries, especially through the implementation of reading classes to help communities in need of guidance.

"We want the village library to be an inclusive space, where children and adults feel comfortable learning regardless of their reading proficiency level.

"The role of rural libraries is very important in fostering culture within the community", he said.

The Community Determination, Semarak Integration Segamat Programme is a strategic initiative of the PNM through the Village Library which combines elements of literacy, heritage, cultural arts and lifelong learning.

The programme is based on Malaysia's MADANI agenda and aspirations for national unity, as well as highlighting the strength of Johor's heritage through competitions, workshops and activities related to history, tourism, food, heritage and culture. - TVS
