KUCHING, July 11: A major fire that broke out at an industrial complex in Demak Laut Industrial Park on Friday destroyed three warehouses and damaged two others, prompting a large-scale response from fire and rescue personnel across Kuching.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Tabuan Jaya responded to the emergency at 12.23 pm on July 10 and a team of firefighters with the support from personnel from the Petra Jaya, Batu Lintang and Padungan fire stations, as well as five members of the Bako Volunteer Fire Brigade were immediately mobilised to the scene.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported.
According to the operations commander TPgB II Tan Min Chai, the fire involved five permanent warehouse structures. Four of the warehouses were interconnected, allowing the flames to spread rapidly through the complex.
The fire was reported to have originated in Warehouse 1, which was used to store materials for ice cream manufacturing. The blaze subsequently spread to a food products warehouse, a fertiliser storage facility, a paint thinner storage warehouse and a nearby logistics warehouse.
The extent of the damage varied among the affected premises. The Ai-Cha warehouse and K.S.C Lee Enterprise fertiliser warehouse were completely destroyed, while the warehouse operated by Mendiya Trch Sdn Bhd also suffered total loss. The SM Qlasixco food products warehouse sustained approximately 40 per cent damage, while the logistics warehouse operated by Kilang Jipun Logistics Sdn Bhd suffered around 10 per cent damage.
Firefighters deployed both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies, using foam extinguishing agents through four hose lines equipped with six nozzles. An aerial ladder platform (ALP) was also utilised to combat the fire from above and prevent it from spreading across the roofs of the affected structures.
The fire was brought under control at 3.54pm on Friday. However, firefighters continued working through the night and into this morning to extinguish lingering hotspots.
As of 7am, firefighters were still conducting overhaul operations at the Ai-Cha and SM Qlasixco warehouses. Firefighters were using hose lines, fire engine pumps and hydrant water supplies to eliminate remaining embers and prevent any possibility of re-ignition. — DayakDaily
