SIBU: The recent public shooting incident here has prompted Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to urge the authorities to take decisive action against unlawful elements in the town.

Tiong, who is the Bintulu MP, stressed the need to prevent any recurrence of such incidents for the safety and peace of the Sibu community.

“While I have confidence in the capabilities of the Sibu police to combat criminal elements, there should be no compromise in adopting a zero-tolerance approach towards such crimes. Any leniency shown might embolden criminals,” he said in a press statement today.

Tiong urged the police to swiftly resolve the recent shooting case, and appealed to the public to cooperate with the police, providing information to round up the culprits and eliminate threats to society.

Highlighting the need for enhanced patrol and law enforcement efforts, he said it is important to increase security-sensitive area patrols, especially in places like entertainment venues and bars.

The shooting incident at a coffee shop on Lorong 3 Jalan Wong King Huo triggered concerns about the prevalence of firearms in Sibu, elevating anxieties on personal safety.

“Videos circulating on social media depict the assailants recklessly firing shots in broad daylight in a bustling commercial area, displaying no concern for innocent bystanders,” said Tiong, who also serves as the Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.

The police are currently on a manhunt for two gunmen involved in the attempted murder on New Year’s Day.

Three men, aged between 27 and 33, are receiving treatment at a private hospital and are reported to be in stable conditions.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said 10 spent bullets were recovered from the crime scene, believed to be from semi-automatic pistols used by the suspects.
