SIBU (Aug 25): Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) mission of sustainable development goals (SDGs) today will shape how the people of Sibu live their lives for the next 50 years, said chairman Clarence Ting.
The council, he said, is committed to make Sibu safe and sustainable, with the participation of the local community.
“The world is now asking how Sibu is progressing, not whether Sibu can become a city,” said Ting in his speech at the launching of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu’s Go Green Warrior Project at SK Bandaran No.4 here yesterday.
“This is the United Nation’s goal for every human being in the world and how we will live in the next 50 years,” he said of the global drive for a more sustainable and prosperous world for future generations.
In this regard, Ting called upon the youth organisation to adopt and promote sustainable practices, especially in raising public awareness on the problems of plastic waste pollution.
“Plastic bottles are among the hardest materials to decompose and they fill up the landfills the most,” he said, adding that the norm of serving packed mineral bottles at events should also be stopped.
“Instead, ask us to bring our own water bottles,” said Ting, in the presence of JCI Sibu president Simon Hii, school’s headmaster Ling Ei Sieng and other guests.
