Torch relay marks start of 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival in Sibu

SIBU (Aug 10): Hundreds of people representing various organisations and political parties joined the ‘39th National Chinese Cultural Festival Torch Relay’ event here this evening.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting led the team in the walk, which started off at the Sibu Gateway and proceeded to Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) ground at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang.

Those joining the programme were Lanang MP Alice Lau, Sibu MP Oscar Ling, Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

Ting later passed the torch to federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who later used it to light up the cauldron on stage, which marked the official opening of the Chinese Cultural Night of BCF 2024.

There were also 13 torches being lit up on stage, to signify the 13 states in Malaysia.
