MIRI (Sept 7): A traffic light intersection will replace the small gyratory along the Taman Tunku-Lusut road near the Sibuti parliamentary service centre, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni in his Facebook post yesterday.

He said the project was approved by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government recently, with the tender expected to be called soon.

“The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

“Hopefully, with this traffic light, the number of accidents here would decrease and the drivers would be more careful,” he said, adding that the project is currently at design stage, and Miri City Council will be the implementing agency.

Lukanisman, who is Sibuti MP, said the public had been calling for a traffic light system to replace the mini roundabout but it could not be done earlier due to limitations in allocations for his parliamentary constituency.

Presently, road users have to brave the erratic traffic flow and indifferent attitude of some drivers in negotiating the current mini-gyratory.

The situation is exacerbated by the many lorries passing though this area, and accidents are also common at the section.
