KUCHING, June 7: The leadership and contributions of the late Tun Datuk Abang Openg to Sarawak’s development were highlighted in a theatre production that traces his journey through periods of political change, war and state-building.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sebuah Montaj Sejarah: Teater Tun Openg – Awal Sebuah Legasi, staged at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) complex Banquet Hall on Saturday (June 6), depicts the life and legacy of the statesman, who played a significant role in shaping Sarawak’s history.

The production received the support of Sarawak’s top leadership, including Sarawak Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his daughter Dayang Nurjihan were also present, alongside State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, deputy ministers, heads of departments and other distinguished guests.

Organised by Pertubuhan Anak Seni Bandarsah Kuching (PASBK), the production uses a narrative and dramatic approach to explore the challenges, struggles and principles that shaped Tun Openg’s leadership during pivotal moments in Sarawak’s history, including the Japanese Occupation, the transition of power and the State’s political development.

PASBK chairman Abdul Rahman Zainuddin described the production as an important effort by the arts community to preserve and share the story of a leader whose service left a lasting impact on Sarawak.

He also thanked the director, writer, cast members, musicians and technical crew for their commitment in bringing the historical production to life.

The theatre production is adapted from a book authored by Dato Dr Jeniri Amir based on an original concept by Dahiri Saini, with script adaptation and direction by Abdillah Untong.

The performance was accompanied by the PASBK Orchestra and Combo under the baton of conductor Narawi Rashidi. — DayakDaily
