KUCHING: TV Sarawak (TVS) has addressed recent misunderstandings regarding the inclusion of the ‘O Holy Night’ song in their forthcoming Christmas programme.
In a press statement on Friday (Nov 24), the Sarawak-based television broadcaster clarified ongoing preparations to feature the song, indicating a previous miscommunication among involved parties.
“It’s crucial to note that there was never an intention to omit this song from our programme,” the statement said.
TVS highlighted the programme’s central theme: a Christmas carol-themed musical event, aiming to engage 1,500 participants. This comes following social media discussions over the alleged exclusion of the song.
“We’re focused on a production that not only honours Christmas but also underlines Sarawak’s communal harmony,” TVS affirmed.
The programme is scheduled for December 3, 2023, with a broadcast date set for December 23, 2023, on TVS.
In a related development, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, called for consistent respect and celebration of different religions during cultural festivals. Speaking at a State Legislative Assembly (DUN) press conference on Friday, Tiang emphasised Sarawak’s multiracial identity, drawing parallels with other religious festivals like Deepavali and Wesak Day.
Tiang, also the vice president of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Central Youth chief, stressed the importance of respectful engagement with churches for Christmas events.
Additionally, the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) confirmed their withdrawal from the event after a dispute over song selection, where their proposal to replace ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ with ‘O Holy Night’ was initially declined.
