MIRI (Aug 4): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two tugboats and eight crew members yesterday for failing to provide a valid Domestic Shipping Licence (DSL).

MMEA Miri director Capt Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said that the tugboats were detected during a routine patrol approximately 3.7 nautical miles northwest of Lutong beach.

“Checks conducted found that both tugboats were operated by all local crew members aged between 20 and 56.

“The crew members and their tugboats were escorted to the Maritime Vessel detention centre for further investigation.” he said.

Mohd Khairol said that the case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952/60 for failing to present a valid DSL.

He stressed that MMEA will not compromise with any party found to be violating the maritime law and that stern actions will be taken against them.
