KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has installed 1,600 wireless access points in key areas across the campus to provide students with fast internet access recently.

The university provided a 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) high-speed broadband internet capacity, offering comprehensive Wi-Fi services to 17,054 students for teaching, learning, research, innovation, and its sustainability initiatives.

“All students on campus can enjoy fast internet access for learning purposes, information search, completing assignments, and interacting with lecturers through the teaching and learning systems developed by UNIMAS.

“This UNIMAS digital initiative is part of the University’s Smart Campus policy to ensure the entire campus receives high-quality Wi-Fi service and supports new applications that are being or will be developed by UNIMAS,” said a press release issued by UNIMAS today.

Besides, UNIMAS welcomes and deeply appreciates the concern of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, regarding comprehensive internet access across all public university campuses.

“This is to ensure that all public university campuses can operate smoothly and provide a conducive digital environment for teaching and learning for students.

“UNIMAS, through the Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC), is always committed to ensuring internet access covers all essential areas within the campus, especially in faculty buildings, lecture halls, laboratories, student dormitories, and strategic student gathering places such as the library, student affairs buildings, and cafes,” it said.

As the digital centre responsible for managing and providing internet access at UNIMAS, TAHODC works closely with the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to implement a plan for comprehensive campus-wide internet coverage.

“This ensures that students and staff can consistently access stable and fast internet services, as guaranteed and secured digital service accessibility is an essential aspect of enhancing the quality of higher education in the country.

It also empowers a dynamic digital ecosystem for teaching and learning, research, and innovation, producing UNIMAS graduates who are future-ready and continuing impactful initiatives for the community in line with UNIMAS’ aspiration to contribute to the nation’s digitalisation development,” it said.
