KUCHING (July 30): University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) campus in Kota Samarahan, which will serve as one of the sports villages for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 from Aug 17 to 24, is ready to welcome athletes from across the country.
Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said that in addition to accommodation, Unimas will also provide training facilities, health services and security throughout the athletes’ stay.
“There are eight residential colleges on the west campus that will be used, with a capacity to accommodate up to 8,000 athletes, including coaches and officials.
“Comfortable accommodation is crucial to allow athletes to focus, and we hope this will inspire them to perform well in the competition,” he told Bernama.
Ahmad Hata also expressed hope that as the host, the Sarawak contingent will achieve victory and emerge as champions.
Sukma 2024 will involve nine divisions in Sarawak, namely Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
In Kuching, several key events will be held at the Pandalela Rinong Aquatic Centre, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Stadium, the Sarawak Stadium and Stadium Perpaduan.
This year’s Games will feature 37 sports, comprising 488 events: 236 men’s events, 217 women’s events and 35 mixed events.
Sarawak has previously hosted the Games twice, in 1990 and 2016. – Bernama
