KOTA SAMARAHAN, 18 Sept: Three students from the University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) created a breakthrough when they were crowned as the overall champion of IC Design Competition 2025 (ICDC25) through their innovation in Low Power Operational Amplifier design (OpAmp).

The student team of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, UNIMAS's Faculty of Engineering is composed of Martin Kennedy and Alexander Taylor, Mohamad Iszuanessrol Nasir and Emmanuel Jawin Jerry Tanny.

The design was later applied in the Arduino Based Temperature Monitoring System prototype, thus proving students' ability to produce chip designs for real-world applications.

According to a UNIMAS statement, the team's success was also supported by continuing guidance of the guiding speaker embracing the team's advisor, Dr Dayang Nur Salmi Dharmiza Awang Salleh.

"The project was developed over a two-month period covering the entire integrated circuit development process, from Op-Amp circuit design, layout design or layout design, tape out process to chip packaging.

"The effort yields results when the actual chips are successfully produced and then fully implemented in the prototype system being developed", the statement said.

The achievements demonstrate the ability of UNIMAS students in the field of integrated circuit design, particularly producing low power circuits that can be translated from chip level to real applications.

As the overall ICDC25 Champion organised by SMD Sarawak Sdn Bhd, UNIMAS team brought home a cash prize of RM20,000 as well as the winning trophy.

The presentation of awards to the winners was completed by Sarawak Premier, Grandfather Tan Sri Brother Johari Tun Openg.
