KUCHING: Universiti Putra Malaysia’s campus in Bintulu plans to offer a veterinary medicine degree programme to produce more veterinarians in Sarawak.

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the ministry planned the development of this programme in collaboration with the university due to the shortage of veterinarians in the state.

“My ministry will provide full support because this is a step forward to meet the aspiration of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) by the year 2030,” he said.

Dr Rundi said this when officiating at the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVS) appreciation gala night held at a hotel here on Sunday (Nov 12).

On the department’s effort to eradicate rabies throughout the state, he stressed the importance of full cooperation from local authorities, non-govermental organisations (NGOs) as well as dog owners.

“We need to make efforts to contain the rabies outbreak in suburban areas as well as urban areas.

“This can only be achieved with the cooperation of city councils and urban communities,” he added.

At the same event, he also presented Excellent Service Awards, Retiree Appreciation Certificates and End of Contract Staff Appreciation Certificates.

Also present was DVS director Datuk Dr Adrian Susin Ambud.
