SIBURAN: A group of students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) have undertaken a significant environmental initiative aimed at cleaning and preserving the local river in Kampung Pesang.
The programme, held on Saturday (June 29), was part of their community development project for the Community Development subject.
Recognising the critical importance of clean water and sustainable environmental practices, the students organised this event following the recent World Water Day celebration.
The students’ initiative is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing challenges of river pollution and improper waste disposal that plague many rivers in Kuching, including those in rural areas like Kampung Pesang.
These rivers are essential not only for the local ecosystem but also for the communities that depend on them for their livelihoods and cultural practices.
The programme not only involved the physical clean-up of the river but also emphasised educating the local community about the long-term benefits of maintaining clean water sources.
Starting at 9.00am, the day was filled with activities focused on cleaning up the riverbanks, removing debris and educating the local residents about the impact of pollution on their environment and health.
The event concluded with a community discussion on sustainable practices and ways to continue protecting their river.
In addition to environmental conservation, the programme also aimed to strengthen the relationship between the students and the villagers.
