SIBU (Aug 26): The progress for the construction of the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) Sibu has reached 84 per cent completion, said Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He told reporters after a site visit that he was hopeful the school can be completed by the end of the year.

However, he believed obtaining the Occupational Permit and so on might take some time.

“We hope by the first quarter of next year, everything would be in order so we can get ready for the intake of students by 2026,” he said.

When asked on the school’s capacity, he said the school can accommodate 500 students at any one time.

“We will enrol 100 students for the first batch — similar to what we did for the YSISS at Mile 12, Kuching-Serian and YSISS in Petra Jaya, because the number will increase gradually over the years,” he said, adding YSISS Sibu is the third in Sarawak after the aforementioned two.

He also mentioned students will be provided with hostels and other facilities borne fully by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawk.

Adding on, Sagah said YSISS is open to all Primary Six students and they would need to sit for an entry assessment test.

“We will emphasise the use of English but that does not mean we don’t study Bahasa Malaysia. We will still do that. We also hope we can produce more Science students so we will have more people for the technology and digital sector, in line with the Sarawak’s government policy of moving towards the use of new energy, particularly green energy,” he said.

He added priority to study in YSISS will be given to children from B40 families (50 per cent), M40 (40 per cent) and T20 (10 per cent).

He also did not discount there might be students who would not need to use hostel facilities.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
