KAPIT: To ensure the prosperity of Sarawak, the formula needed to advance our youth is harmony.
Speaking at the state-level Youth Day in Dewan Suarah Kapit today (Dec 2), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted Sarawak’s unique blend of unity and multiculturalism, a model also acknowledged by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports.
In his speech, delivered on his behalf by Sarawak Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Abang Johari appealed to the youth to preserve Sarawak’s distinctive harmony.
“Indeed, I am very proud of the spirit of unity, multiculturalism, and high openness, especially among the youth, thus uplifting the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said.
Echoing Abang Johari’s sentiments, Abdul Karim noted Sarawak’s diverse population, home to 34 ethnic groups, an increase from the previously recognised 28. He emphasised the importance of equal treatment for all groups, stating that unity is key for the younger generation in shaping the state’s future.
“It is imperative for them to understand and uphold this agenda, ensuring the continuation of our harmony,” he added.
Abdul Karim urged leaders and youth to foster a spirit of unification, transcending ethnic and religious differences, and to reject extremism.
