SIBU: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability (NRES) is committed to tackling climate change through a comprehensive Climate Change Policy.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the ministry is working towards achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“This involves reducing fossil fuel use, increasing renewable energy adoption, and promoting green technology,” he said at the opening of the ‘Our Nature’ Carnival 2024 at the Sarikei Central Hall yesterday (Aug 10).

The carnival aimed to raise public awareness of sustainability and strengthen NRES collaboration with stakeholders.

Sarawak, Huang said, is leading the way with solar and hydroelectric energy projects and intensified forest conservation efforts.

On the Campaign to Plant 100 Million Trees 2020-2025, he said Sarawak has planted 35 million trees, leading other states.

“This helps reduce climate change impacts and restore ecosystems. Sarawak contributes to global climate action through forest preservation and renewable energy,” he said.

Malaysia has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity by 45 per cent in 2030 compared to 2005 levels, involving energy, transportation, and agriculture sectors.

Huang called for public support for sustainable natural resource management.

“Collaboration between the private sector, NGOs, and the community is essential for achieving sustainable development and environmental well-being,” he said.

Also present were Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, NRES Secretary-General Datuk Dr Ching Thoo a/l Kim, and Sarikei Resident Michael Ronnie Langgong.
