KUCHING (April 8): A 1.3-acre area behind the Public Bank at Mile 7 here has been identified for the proposed development of the Kota Sentosa Night Market, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
He said the estimated development cost of the project is approximately RM1 million.
“The site has been identified by Pdawan Municipal Council (MPP) as a strategic location to resettle illegal hawkers in Kota Sentosa into a more organised, safe, and cleaner environment.
“This initiative aims not only to enhance the image of the area but also to safeguard the welfare of small traders by providing more systematic facilities,” he said in a statement.
Yap, who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) deputy treasurer and Kota Sentosa branch chairman, issued the statement after conducting a site visit together with MPP officers, who briefed Yap on the scope of the project on Wednesday.
He noted that MPP has also requested part of the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) allocation under him be considered to support the project’s implementation.
Yap said he will carefully study the proposal in detail, taking into account the needs and interests of the local community, the welfare of the affected hawkers, and the importance of ensuring sustainable and well-planned development within Kota Sentosa.
“We want a win-win solution – hawkers are provided with a better and more conducive place to conduct their businesses, while the community benefits from a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment,” he said.
Yap also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with MPP and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that any development undertaken will bring meaningful and long-term benefits to the people of Kota Sentosa.
