KUCHING (Sept 8): A total of 1,989 graduates from the Sarawak Zone Politeknik and Community College (POLYCC) received their scrolls during the POLYCC Convocation 2024 held at Kuching Politeknik’s Perak Jubilee Hall yesterday.

On hand to present them their respective credentials was Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

In an address prior to the presentation ceremony, Sagah said the development of digital economy has emerged as a main agenda by the Sarawak government in line with this Industrial Revolution 4.0 era.

He said the state government has come up with various initiatives and policies which have paved the way for massive transformation in the major economic sectors in the region.

“Digital economy not only opens up new job opportunities but also enhances Sarawak’s competitiveness at the global level,” he said when representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the convocation.

Sagah pointed out that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) plays a vital role in supporting the development of this digital economy

He said through TVET, a competent and highly skilled workforce in the fields of information technology, data science and other related areas can be produced.

He believed that POLYCC will uphold its role to complement the government’s efforts in equipping the people with the skills and knowledge necessary to face Industrial Revolution 4.0.

“TVET should be a priority for the youths to pursue their studies because of the high marketability, which is over 90 per cent in the industry,” he said.

According to him, the National TVET 2030 policy is key to steering Malaysia towards a developed country by emphasising skilled human capital through responsive, flexible and inclusive TVET programmes.

Sagah said the Sarawak government has always given its full support to this policy in line with its existing policies at the state level.

“Our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 outlines this aspect, aiming to see as much as 20 per cent of TVET student enrolment to contribute to the Sarawak’s economic development including the Sarawak Renewable Energy Corridor (Score),” he said.

He said TVET has been regarded as a ‘game changer’ in today’s education system.

The state government will keep up its efforts to strengthen TVET in this region towards ensuring that Sarawak’s workforce would remain competent and competitive globally, he added.
