KUCHING, Mar 10: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof has agreed to fund trash skimmers and collection boats for Sungai Sarawak and Sungai Miri, while supporting efforts to resolve a siltation problem affecting fishermen at Kampung Batu Satu in Miri.
According to a media statement from the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS), the equipment will support efforts to remove water hyacinth and floating domestic waste from the rivers, contributing to cleaner waterways and more sustainable river management.
The matter was raised during a courtesy call led by MOTS Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, accompanied by a delegation from MOTS and the Sarawak Rivers Board, at Menara PETRA in Putrajaya yesterday (Mar 9).
During the meeting, Lee highlighted the siltation problem at Kampung Batu Satu following the completion of a wave breaker constructed under a coastal erosion control project in the area. He requested additional allocation to address the issue, noting that the siltation has disrupted fishermen’s access to the sea and affected their livelihood, to which Fadillah agreed.
“We appreciate the support shown by the Deputy Prime Minister in addressing this matter. The proposed solution will help restore access for fishermen and improve the overall condition of the coastal environment in Kampung Batu Satu,” he said.
Lee also briefed Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), on several flood mitigation and river management initiatives in Sarawak, including the need for remedial works at the Sungai Sarawak Barrage and the upgrading of telemetry stations to enhance flood monitoring along the Sungai Sarawak Basin. — DayakDaily
