KUCHING, May 3: One person was killed while four others were injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on Jalan Miri Bypass near the traffic lights today.

In a statement, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that the accident was reported at approximately 2am involving a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle and a car.

“The 4WD, driven by a local man in his mid-20s, was travelling from Permyjaya towards Taman Tunku when the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the opposite lane.

“The car, driven by a 39-year-old man with three passengers, was unable to avoid the collision and struck the left side of the four-wheel drive vehicle,” he said.

The front passenger in the car, a 43-year-old local man, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and two male passengers aged 19 and 20 were taken to Miri Hospital.

The 4WD driver also sustained multiple injuries and was referred to the emergency unit at Miri Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
