SIBU: Fifteen people tested positive for methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu, after urine screening was conducted on 84 individuals during an integrated roadblock operation on Tuesday night (Oct. 13).

The discovery has raised concerns over the threat posed by drug abuse to road safety, particularly the risk of individuals driving under the influence of illegal substances and endangering the lives of other road users.

The Sibu District National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), in a statement posted on Facebook today, said the integrated operation was conducted jointly with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sibu and the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) Sibu.

The operation targeted commercial and private vehicle users to detect individuals involved in drug abuse, while also ensuring compliance with the law and enhancing road safety.

Sibu District AADK’s Head, Mohamad Farizal Mohamad Buang, who was present during the operation, stressed the importance of accountability, strict enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach towards drug abuse, particularly in the commercial transport sector.

The agency said enforcement efforts would continue to be strengthened to curb the risk of people driving under the influence of drugs or other prohibited substances.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and there would be no compromise on drug abuse, which could threaten public safety,” he said.

Also present were JPJ Sibu Branch Enforcement Division’s Head, Mohd Ariffin Zaini, and JIM Sibu Branch Enforcement Unit’s Head, Sapura Let.
