KUCHING (Dec 2): Sarawak Skills has a current enrolment of 2,235 students and 3,776 working adults undergoing training across 26 specialised programmes, said Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said this strengthened its position as a leading Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.

“Its strong 93 per cent employability rate within six months of graduation reflects its ability to supply the workforce with industry-related skills and directly supports Sarawak’s talent development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“To expand regional impact, Sarawak Skills has strengthened collaborations including the AI Productivity Programme with my ministry and the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC); ‘halal’ certification training for TESDA Philippines; and programme developments with Autoridade Nacional do Petróleo (ANP) in Timor-Leste.

“These efforts enhance capabilities in downstream oil and gas, mechatronics, virtual learning and smart farming,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here yesterday.

Sagah said new professional programmes have also been introduced to meet rising demand in digital and technology sectors including the Certified Data Science Specialist, Certified Cyber Defender Practitioner, Network Operation Centre (NOC) Operations and Service Management, as well as creative content training.

He said that his ministry, together with the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak and Yayasan Hasanah, was revitalising rural agriculture through the 14-hectare Community-Based Paddy Planting Project in Tawang Baa, Padawan.

“The initiative is boosting paddy yields, improving livelihoods and strengthening food security,” he said.

To expand access to TVET, Sagah said the Mobile Training Unit (MTU) programme deploys two custom-built mobile workshops, a full-sized 20-foot unit and a compact 13-foot unit, equipped with industry-standard tools, virtual reality (VR) welding systems and outdoor learning spaces.

“These MTUs deliver hands-on, on-site training to communities across Sarawak,” he added.
