2,800 students at University of Technology Sarawak under Free Tertiary Education Scheme

KUCHING, Sept 23: Approximately 2,800 students enrolled at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) are benefiting from the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), underscoring the Sarawak government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education.

UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Shahril Osman said the university currently has about 5,700 students, with nearly half receiving support under the FTES initiative.

“Of the 2,800 FTES recipients at UTS, around 1,500 students also receive stipends, including housing allowances,” he said as reported by TVS news.

He noted that the scheme primarily covers science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes, which form the core of the university’s academic offerings.

“UTS offers 18 undergraduate programmes, of which about 16 are STEM-based. As such, the majority of our programmes fall within the STEM field,” he said.

Mohammad Shahril was speaking to reporters after a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

Looking ahead, he said UTS plans to expand its academic portfolio by introducing new programmes, particularly in the field of medicine, to meet future workforce and industry demands.

The implementation of FTES across Sarawak government-owned higher education institutions has widened educational opportunities for students, enabling them to pursue tertiary studies regardless of their socio-economic background. — DayakDaily
