KUCHING: The upgrading of Jalan Sultan Tengah, stretching all the way to Damai, will introduce a 26-kilometre route tailored for cyclists and pedestrians.

Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the primary goal of this dedicated route is to enhance the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians while using the road.

“We have opted for the approach of establishing a designated bicycle path, while also providing a pedestrian path for the safety of users.

“This is one of the suggestions included in Kuching North City Hall’s (DBKU) planning when building new routes in the future,” he said.

He said these when attending the Car Free Morning Programme at Tugu Pahlawan here today.

Additionally, Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman, revealed that the width of the bicycle and pedestrian path would be 1.5 metres, featuring two lanes on the left side of the newly constructed road.

He said this initiative also aims to address a concern that emerged on Jalan Sultan Tengah, where the narrow pathway led to unsafe conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

“As such, the Sarawak government, through DBKU planning, is committed to enhancing public safety measures,” he said.
