KUCHING, Dec 21: The third edition of Sukan Sarawak (Suksar) 2024 is scheduled to be held in Sibu from Jan 15 to 18, 2024, according to the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Suksar 2024 will feature a total of 13 events, including weightlifting, cycling (road and off-road), basketball, volleyball, futsal, hockey, judo, karate, silat, sepak takraw, boxing, taekwondo, and wushu.

The participants will be athletes aged 21 and below who have not won any gold medals in Sukma and are not involved in national athlete development programmes.

The objective of Suksar is to act as a talent scouting platform to identify potential athletes to represent Sarawak in Sukma 2024.

It also provides sports associations and officers with valuable experience in organising events and offers prospective athletes exposure to prepare for Sukma.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for the morning of Jan 15, with the closing ceremony taking place on Jan 18 in the afternoon at Sibu Indoor Stadium.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to grace the closing ceremony.

Suksar 2024 will involve a total of 12 contingents divided into four zones: Northern Zone (Limbang, Miri, Bintulu), Central Zone (Sibu, Mukah, Kapit), Western Zone (Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman), and Southern Zone (Serian, Samarahan, Kuching).

The chef de mission for each contingent will be the Resident officer from each zone.

The subsequent Suksar in 2025 is expected to take place in the Western Zone, involving Sri Aman, Sarikei, and Betong. — DayakDaily
