KUCHING: The handover of Bintulu Port to the Sarawak government presents a promising outlook for both the port and Sarawak.

Economist Dr Evan Lau said firstly, the transfer signifies enhanced local autonomy, granting Sarawak greater control over port operations and management.

“This shift in authority not only strengthens the region’s governance but also fosters a sense of ownership.

“Secondly, the transition to local management carries significant economic benefit,” he said in a statement today.

He also said that Sarawak’s direct influence on port-related economic activities is poised to increase, translating into higher revenue streams and more job opportunities for the local population.

“The port’s pivotal role as a major gateway positions Sarawak favourably for economic growth,” he added.

Evan also said that the handover is likely to stimulate investments in infrastructure development.

“This, in turn, sets the stage for a more robust economic environment in Sarawak, supported by modern facilities and logistics.

“The positive implications extend to international trade and diplomatic relationships. Bintulu Port’s connectivity to regional and global trade routes enhances Sarawak’s global reach.

“This increased accessibility opens doors to expanded business opportunities, market growth and the development of a more interconnected Sarawak,” he said.
