KUCHING, Sept 19: The amendment to Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO) will be tabled in Parliament end of this year.

According to a news report from TV Sarawak (TVS), Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said it is to ensure SLO, which was last amended 20 years ago, will be in line with Employment Act 1955 that covers workers in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Next year, the Employment Act will be adjusted in line with SLO and also Sabah Labor Ordinance that I have presented in Parliament before.

“It will enable workers throughout Malaysia to have same rights and protection without any double treatment,” he was quoted by TVS as saying after a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Sim also conveyed his gratitude to Abang Johari for being one of the individuals ensuring coordination between the SLO and the Employment Act 1955.

The Sarawak government has previously agreed to amend the SLO to ensure it is in line with the International Labor Convention and also the latest amendment to the Employment Act 1955 (Amendment 2022) which was approved in Parliament in March 2022.

The Act came into force on Jan 1, 2023 for the benefit of employers and employees. — DayakDaily
