MIRI, Sept 13: A Sarawakian Bumiputera-owned oil and gas enterprise will debut on Bursa Malaysia this Monday, marking a major milestone in expanding Bumiputera ownership and presence across the state’s corporate sector.

Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Sarawak special convention in Miri today, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan declared the upcoming listing a tangible result of the state government’s continuous strategy to develop local entrepreneurs and elevate their standing in high-value industries.

“This coming Monday, a Bumiputera oil and gas company owned by our own people will be listed on Bursa Malaysia.

“This is our agenda — the agenda to develop the Bumiputera economy. This is the foundation of our struggle and what we should pursue to develop entrepreneurs and businesses among the Bumiputera community,” he said.

Awang Tengah stressed that the state wants local entrepreneurs to move beyond small-scale operations and build a commanding presence in the enterprise and corporate arenas.

He added that strengthening participation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through proper collaboration remains central to driving business growth.

He noted that this economic drive directly supports Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision to position Sarawak as a leader in the new economy.

High-growth sectors targeted under this blueprint include the digital economy, high-tech manufacturing, semiconductors, aerospace, hydrogen production, renewable energy, sustainable mining and sustainable forest management.

According to him, developing these targeted sectors will reinforce Sarawak’s future economic security while systematically raising income levels for the people.

Highlighting the economic foundation of the Northern Zone, he pointed to its rich natural resources, oil and gas assets and renewable energy strength—backed by major hydroelectric developments such as Bakun, Murum and Baleh.

He also outlined the untapped economic potential of the region’s vast forest resources, which serve as natural capital for pharmaceutical development, carbon sequestration, and carbon trading, alongside oil palm and forest plantations that can power circular economy projects like waste-to-energy generation.

The Deputy Premier added that the Northern Zone’s economic expansion will be driven by the distinct strengths of its urban centers with Miri functioning as a key hub for services and tourism and Bintulu operating as an industrial powerhouse for oil and gas. — DayakDaily
