KUCHING, Oct 6: Sarawak is prioritising direct flights to South Korea over Bangkok as part of its ongoing air connectivity expansion, driven by stronger passenger demand, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking to reporters following the grand opening of a hotel in Kuching today, he clarified that whilst potential new routes — including direct Kuching–Bangkok flights ahead of the 2027 SEA Games — remain under consideration, final decisions hinge on passenger load studies.

“South Korea seems to have more demand than Bangkok, so when you compare the two, it makes more sense for us to prioritise Korea,” he explained, adding that whilst Bangkok already has existing connectivity, further study is required before committing to new capacity.

South Korea is not the only market being targeted through this demand-led strategy.

The Premier cited Jakarta as another prime example, where heavy traffic from medical tourism makes direct service a natural priority.

To capture that market, direct flights between Kuching and Jakarta operated by State-owned regional carrier AirBorneo are scheduled to launch by the end of this month.

“AirBorneo will complement existing commercial airlines as Sarawak expands its route network, with services to be increased progressively in line with passenger demand.

“This infrastructure push comes at a crucial time as the State prepares for a heavy line-up of major international events,” he added.

The State is set to host the 2027 SEA Games, followed by the World Water Congress in 2028 and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Friendship Games shortly thereafter. — DayakDaily
