MIRI (Dec 8): Seven churches in Bario received a total of RM1.187 million in grants from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) during a ceremony on Sunday.

Presenting the grant cheques at Gereja Umum Bario was Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is Mulu assemblyman.

Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Bued Main Beruh Bario received RM72,700, while BEM Bario Asal was granted RM54,900 for church equipment.

Other recipients included BEM Bario Asal (RM250,000) for upgrading its pastor’s house, BEM Pa Umor (RM158,000), Ramapuh A Bario Church (RM500,000), Gereja Umum Bario (RM60,000), and BEM Pa Mada (RM92,000).

Gerawat said the grants underscored the state government’s continued commitment to support churches in rural areas, particularly in Bario, by ensuring access to facilities and basic needs, as well as continuity of ministry work.

“Thanks to Unifor for this significant support, and to all church leaders and the community who have worked hand in hand to strengthen ministry in Bario,” he said.

He expressed hope the grants would further reinforce unity and the well-being of the people in Mulu.
