SRI AMAN, July 2: The final stitching of the Batang Lupar 2 Bridge has been successfully completed, marking a major milestone for one of Sarawak’s key infrastructure projects that is expected to open to the public in August 2026 and slash the travel distance between Sri Aman and Betong from 73km to just 37km via the Sarawak Second Trunk Road.
The historic achievement was commemorated during the final stitching ceremony officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, signifying the completion of the final connection of the bridge’s main structure.
In a statement today, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak said the ceremony underscored the successful implementation of a strategic Sarawak government project aimed at strengthening the region’s transportation network and enhancing connectivity between Sri Aman and Betong.
Construction of Batang Lupar 2 Bridge enters final stretch with the completion of the stitching ceremony on July 2, 2026.Built to JKR R5 standards, the Batang Lupar 2 Bridge spans a total length of 870 metres. It features a 200-metre-wide navigational channel with a clearance height of 23 metres, as well as two cable-stayed towers rising 145.5 metres above the river.
The project also includes the construction of 2.08km of access roads equipped with drainage systems, road furniture and safety features to ensure smooth and safe travel for road users.
Once operational, JKR Sarawak emphasised that the bridge will provide a significantly shorter alternative route between Sri Aman and Betong, reducing travel distance by nearly half compared to the existing route via the Pan Borneo Highway.
Beyond improving connectivity, the project is expected to stimulate economic activities along the Sri Aman-Betong corridor, particularly in the trade, agriculture and tourism sectors, while supporting sustainable socio-economic development in the region.
JKR Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to delivering strategic infrastructure projects in accordance with the highest standards of quality, safety and engineering excellence to benefit the people and support Sarawak’s long-term development aspirations.
The Batang Lupar 2 Bridge forms part of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road initiative, which aims to improve accessibility and unlock greater economic potential in the region’s coastal and rural areas. — DayakDaily
