BAU, July 2: A nurse in her late 40s has lost approximately RM6,770 after falling victim to an online scam involving the purchase of “premium fresh chicken” advertised on Facebook.
Bau District Police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the victim came across an advertisement on the social media platform offering chicken at an unusually low price and contacted the suspect via WhatsApp to place an order.
“She was initially instructed to make a payment of RM5 through a link provided by the suspect, but the transaction failed,” he said in a statement today.
The suspect then directed the victim to download an application known as “Delivery4U” and activate a cash-on-delivery (COD) payment method.
Shortly after following the instructions, the victim received a notification from her bank informing her that her account had been temporarily blocked.
Upon checking her account, she discovered that about RM6,770 had been transferred without her permission to an unknown account. The ordered chicken was never delivered, and all attempts to contact the suspect failed.
Mohd Haide said the case is being investigated as online fraud and reminded the public to be cautious of suspicious online advertisements and unsolicited payment links.
Members of the public who fall victim to cyber scams, including phone scams, love scams, e-commerce fraud and fake loan schemes, are advised to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997, especially if a suspicious transfer has just been made. — DayakDaily
