Bid to attain Unesco Global Geopark status gains momentum

KUCHING: The Sarawak Delta Geopark is actively preparing for its nomination as a Unesco Global Geopark by 2026.

Sarawak Forestry director Datuk Hamden Mohammad said this at the Sarawak Delta Geopark Expedition Seminar here.

The event is being held in collaboration with various government and local agencies form July 17-18.

“This seminar, along with the expedition, plays a crucial role in documenting the geological, biological, and cultural heritage of the Sarawak Delta Geopark,” he said.

“Achieving the Unesco Global Geopark status requires continuous effort and high commitment from all stakeholders, including local communities and the government.

“It involves adhering to Unesco’s standards and criteria.”

This two-day seminar gathered 150 participants from multiple organisations, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, and the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre.

The seminar which comes after the Sarawak Delta Geopark Expedition from March 20 to 26 last year serves as a platform for agencies to share findings, discuss research directions, and enhance cooperation in the fields of geology, biology, community engagement and geotourism.

Another key objective is to encourage stakeholder and community involvement to bolster joint management efforts.
