KUCHING, Oct 25: Bintulu recorded the highest median household income in Sarawak, recording a median household income of RM8,317, followed by Samarahan at RM6,785 and Kuching at RM6,741.
According to a report by TVS, the director of the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Sarawak, Dayang Rozana Abang Hassan, said that the average household income for Sarawak stands at RM6,947, registering a growth rate of 3.7 per cent in 2024.
“In terms of average income, Bintulu also ranked first with RM10,480, followed by Kuching (RM8,237), Miri (RM8,166), and Samarahan (RM7,965),” she said.
She said this when met by TVS during the HIES/BA 2024 Outreach Session with the Community, held in conjunction with National and World Statistics Day 2025 in Bau today.
Household monthly average expenditure for Sarawak rose from RM3,915 in 2022 to RM4,281 in 2024, representing a compound annual growth rate of 4.5 per cent.
The increase was driven primarily by spending on food and beverages, housing and utilities, transport, as well as restaurants and accommodation services.
Meanwhile, Sarawak’s poverty line income (PLI) for 2024 was recorded at RM2,718, up from RM2,618 in 2022, with the average food PLI at RM1,327.
Sarawak’s absolute poverty rate was recorded at 8.4 per cent, compared to the national level of 5.1 per cent. — DayakDaily
