Bodies of five missing rowers training for Sarawak Regatta found

KUCHING (Oct 20): The bodies of all five missing rowers whose boat capsized during a training session for the Sarawak Regatta have been recovered this morning

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), two victims were discovered at 6.16am while another victim was found at 6.40am.

“The fourth victim was found by the Sarawak Coastguard at 7.07am, and fifth was located with the assistance of a drone,” it said, adding that the search and rescue team is now awaiting confirmation from the police and Health Ministry.

The missing rowers were identified as Mohammad Ikhmal Sama’ail, 34; Majurie Maharuf, 32; Mohd Afiq Isyamudin Asaari, 26; Mohamad Khairul Bidin, 26; and Muhammad Khairul Hisham Kasturi, 23.

Police had confirmed that all five were members of the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) team from the Premier’s Department.
