KUCHING, 12 September: The development of the sport of bowling in Sarawak shows positive results as more and more local athletes show proud performances and potentially be absorbed into the national elite squad.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Sarawak, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said that the achievements of Sarawak athletes at Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) have not only achieved their set goals but also showed improvement in terms of skills and performance.
"The development of bowling in Sarawak has shown positive developments as the state has managed to produce some athletes who are now in Malaysia's elite squad, including national bowling players Nur Hazirah Ramli and Gillian Lim.
"Young bowlers also gain exposure and experience to be highlighted at the national level, while athletes like Lavinia Kho are emerging as among new talent", he said.
He said this during a media briefing at the Sarawak International Open Tenpin Bowling Championships (SIOTBC) 2026 here, today.
According to him, the SIOTBC 2026 promotion will be an important platform for local athletes, especially young players, to gain experience through international competition.
He said that the presence of international players in the tournament also gives Sarawak athletes an opportunity to measure their ability as well as enhance their experience with high-level players.
"Exposures like this are essential in the effort to produce more Sarawak athletes capable of representing Malaysia on the international stage", he said.
