MIRI (Feb 24): The Zone 7 Limbang Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) remains on standby following a magnitude 6.8 earthquake off Sabah in the early hours of Monday.
Its chief Ramlan Marajan said the department is prepared for any eventualities, including possible aftershocks.
Immediate measures included inspections of high-risk buildings in Limbang, especially older structures showing cracks.
“So far, no emergency reports have been received by Bomba Limbang following the tremors,” he said when contacted on Tuesday, adding that continuous monitoring is ongoing in cooperation with relevant agencies.
Safety advisories have been issued to the public, and residents are urged to report any damage via the 999 emergency line or the nearest fire station.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department reported the earthquake occurred at 12.57am, with an epicentre at 7.0 degrees North and 116.4 degrees East, and a depth of 678 km.
The tremors were felt along Sabah’s west coast and in parts of Sarawak, including Limbang, Miri, and Marudi.
