SIMANGGANG: Six out of eight Sarawak boxers secured their spots in the finals after delivering stellar performances in last night’s semifinals (Aug 20).
Coach Helman Morni expressed pride in his team’s confidence and outstanding performances, despite losing in two weight categories.
“Eight of our boxers have completed their fights, and six of them have made it to the finals. Three more will fight tomorrow (Aug 21) in the next semifinals,” he said.
He made this statement following the boxing event at Sri Aman Indoor Stadium last night.
He singled out Clarkson Evans Tom Frankie’s remarkable fight, where he defeated Aelfred Eter Tohiron from Sabah 5-0 in the men’s minimum weight (45-48kg) category.
“For Clarkson, he has made it through both the quarterfinals and semifinals and has secured his spot in the final. I hope he continues his winning streak.
“In the final, I hope he will stay focused and follow our strategy and plans,” added Helman.
In the men’s lightweight (57-60kg) category, Lam Wee Liang carried Sarawak’s flag into the final after defeating Syafi Syamil Ahmad Faizal of the Federal Territories 5-0.
Meanwhile, Anderton Teck Hieng Tie beat Melaka’s Aniq Zikri Masri on a technical knockout within 28 seconds of the first round in the men’s welterweight (63.5-67kg) category.
Gideon Raquelme Jonathan secured his spot in the final with a 5-0 victory against Kelantan’s Muhammad Hafizyudin Nordin in the men’s middleweight (71-75kg) category.
Khairil Hazami Sulam and Bradley Jilan Kennedy failed to make it to the finals in the men’s bantamweight (51-54kg) and men’s cruiserweight (80-86kg) categories, respectively.
In the women’s minimum weight (45-48kg) category, Sarawak’s Patricia Jaquilina Bruce won 5-0 against Nur Balqis Syazwani Mohd Sahidi from Terengganu.
Hamiesha Hamdan advanced without contest in the women’s featherweight (52-57kg) category as Sabah’s Chalcy July did not meet the required weight and was disqualified.
