SIBU, July 6: Bukit Lima Nature Reserve is seeking recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the country’s largest peat swamp park located within an urban area.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the recognition would boost the park’s visibility nationwide and generate spillover benefits for the local economy.
“This recognition is not just symbolic. It will make Bukit Lima better known throughout the country,” he told reporters after officiating the opening of the Bukit Lima Nature Reserve One-Stop Centre (OSC) on Saturday (July 4), according to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Dr Annuar said the reserve covers about 301 hectares and remains one of the few well-preserved peat swamp ecosystems despite being located in the heart of Sibu.
He added that the completion of a 2.6-kilometre trail linking the southern and northern entrances now allows visitors to access more parts of the reserve.
“This opens up more recreational space for the public while allowing people to appreciate the beauty of the peat swamp forest,” he said.
At the same time, Dr Annuar stressed that the park’s future as a tourism attraction depends on public cooperation.
He urged visitors not to litter or smoke in the reserve, warning that food waste could attract wild animals while discarded cigarette butts could spark fires in the peat soil.
“This park belongs to everyone. Every visitor should treat it as their own property,” he said. — DayakDaily
