KUCHING, Dec 20: Students in the Bukit Saban constituency have been urged to take full advantage of the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), a landmark initiative by the Sarawak government that will come into effect next year.
In a TVS news, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the scheme, the first of its kind in Malaysia, offers a golden opportunity that must be fully utilised by all Sarawakians, regardless of whether they live in urban, rural, or remote areas.
“Therefore, parents with school-going children must provide strong encouragement to ensure students seize this opportunity for a brighter future,” he said when officiating the N37 Bukit Saban Christmas Gala Dinner 2025 held at the Imperial Hotel on Friday (Dec 19).
The Bukit Saban assemblyman explained that eligible students would be able to pursue tertiary education at four Sarawak-owned higher learning institutions: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, Sarawak University of Technology, and i-CATS University College, which collectively offer 64 academic programmes.
He noted that Sarawak and the nation continue to progress alongside rapid technological advancements, creating an increasing demand for a highly skilled workforce.
“We need engineers, architects, doctors, scientists, legal professionals, psychologists, and many others. As such, the people of Bukit Saban must be part of this development and ensure they are not left behind,” he said.
Uggah added that various education development programmes implemented at the constituency level are expected to support students’ academic performance and better prepare them to qualify for the free tertiary education scheme in the future. — DayakDaily
